The Benefits and How to Make Cinnamon & Clove Mouthwash:

Mouthwash is a daily essential in maintaining good oral hygiene. While there are many commercial mouthwashes readily available, there can be more harmful than helpful ingredients! Why not choose the natural route by using two simple ingredients like cinnamon and clove to create your own homemade mouthwash. Nature is powerful and this aromatic elixir not only freshens your breath but also offers a range of benefits for your oral health!

So let’s go over the advantages of using cinnamon and clove mouthwash shall we:

Natural Antimicrobial Properties!!

This is the most important one. Both cinnamon and clove possess natural antimicrobial properties. Cinnamon contains compounds like cinnamaldehyde and eugenol, while clove is rich in eugenol. These substances have been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in the mouth, including the notorious Streptococcus mutans responsible for tooth decay and bad breath! Regular use of a cinnamon and clove mouthwash can help reduce the amount of bacteria in your oral cavity, promoting healthier gums and teeth.

*I had swollen gums for a while and after using for a month I noticed a huge difference. The swelling nearly vanished and no other mouthwash has helped.*

Fresh Breath with a Kick!!

Surely we can all agree that we hope to have fresh breath from using our mouthwash too. Well…The combination of cinnamon and clove in a mouthwash not only leaves a delightful and invigorating scent but also imparts a pleasant, spicy taste to your mouth. It’s true, you can feel it! This is an excellent alternative to alcohol-based mouthwashes that can often lead to dry mouth and an unpleasant aftertaste…don’t forget about all those other ingredients you probably can’t pronounce! Freshen your breath naturally!

Soothing Properties!!

Another bonus!! Clove, in particular, is known for its soothing and numbing properties. This makes it an excellent choice for people dealing with oral discomfort, such as toothaches or sore gums. When used in mouthwash, clove can help alleviate minor oral irritations, providing temporary relief while you address the underlying issue.

Improved Oral Health!!

By using cinnamon and clove mouthwash regularly you’re contributing to your overall oral health. By reducing harmful bacteria and soothing irritation, it aids in the prevention of gum disease, tooth decay, and other oral health issues. Additionally, cinnamon and clove are natural antioxidants, which can help protect your oral tissues from oxidative stress. Not sure of any other mouthwashes that contain natural antioxidants!

Cost Effective & Easy to Make!!

The best part is that homemade cinnamon and clove mouthwash is cost-effective and easy to prepare. If you’re like me then practical is the way to go…

simply fill up a mason jar with filtered or distilled water and then pour into a stainless steel pot (a must). Bring to a boil and throw in a few cinnamon sticks and 2tbsp of Whole Cloves. Turn off the burner and let it all simmer until it’s cooled down (about 30minutes)…LAST PART: simply strain and pour back into the mason jar. You’ll notice that there will be slightly less because of evaporation.

A fun fact/tip: most peanut butter lids fit on pint sized mason jars. 🙂

I buy Ceylon Cinnamon Sticks & Whole Cloves that are both harvested from Sri Lanka. Grade A quality for a great price and you can’t beat that! I’m including my affiliate links for the products I personally LOVE here (if you purchase, I will receive a commission at NO cost to you.. merely trying to help and give a shortcut)

Here’s the official recipe:

  • 2 cups of distilled or filtered water
  • 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon or 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 tablespoons of whole cloves

  1. Boil the water
  2. Add the ground cinnamon or cinnamon sticks and cloves to the water. Turn off the burner and let sit.
  3. Allow the mixture to steep for about 30 minutes.
  4. Strain the liquid to remove the cinnamon and clove remnants.
  5. Store the mouthwash in a clean container. (I prefer a good old fashioned mason jar)
  6. Enjoy! This recipe should last about a month for one person.

Finally, I think It’s important to note that when you’re choosing to make your own cinnamon and clove mouthwash it can be a very sustainable choice too. By avoiding commercial mouthwash products packaged in plastic containers, you’re reducing your environmental footprint and minimizing plastic waste!
